What Is CrossFit?

Strictly speaking, CrossFit is defined as “Constantly Varied Functional Movements executed at High Intensity.” It begins with a belief in fitness. A belief that one trains for any physical contingency – the known, the unknown and the unimaginable!  In performing multiple and varied movements that are natural, safe, reproducible and infinitely scalable, one gains power and speed that vastly exceeds other forms of fitness training.  At the Barbell Academy, we believe in the power of CrossFit, and when combined with diet, lifestyle and an inclusive community of fellow athletes, results are assured.

CrossFit is a results driven program based on maximizing power output. Workouts are completed for time, max number of rounds, or max weight so no matter the task at hand, you shouldn't have anything left in the tank. The body responds best when we challenge it with new demands, so our coaches design each session to push your limits, move faster and lift heavier in order to achieve maximum results.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO I HAVE TO BE IN SHAPE TO WORKOUT WITH YOU?

There is a common misconception that CrossFit is for elite athletes. The truth is that it is for everyone.  You start the journey where you are today, and work at your pace.  Your coaches will help you achieve the level of health you wish to obtain.

Our community is comprised of competitive athletes, former athletes, working professionals, people that had never stepped foot into a gym and people with physical ailments.  All with a common goal of being healthy.

WHY DOES IT SEEM EXPENSIVE FOR JUST A GYM MEMBERSHIP?

The Barbell Academy is not just another gym.  How many times in the past have you said to yourself I should go workout, but that drive to go is missing.  Or you do go and have a crappy workout because you're "just not feeling it".  We have all been there.  Yes, we are more expensive then a big box gym.  Our membership gets the intangible connection with our 'family'.  Something that's like no other, and part of what makes us so special.  When you experience the value of small group training (max is 12 people per class), work with a dedicated coach who is skilled at programming a workout that pushes you to do your best.  A coach that gives one-on-one feedback, motivation, and instruction each and every class.  Our rates aren't that bad.

THIS SEEMS INTIMIDATING; HOW DO I KNOW IF ITS FOR ME?
It is our firm belief that every human being deserves to feel strong and empowered.  While each and every one of us has different goals we are united by a desire to make ourselves better one day at a time.  Our membership or community as we refer to it, helps one another no matter what level someone is at.  No judgements, just encouragement.

I'VE WORKED OUT BEFORE - WHY DO I NEED TO TAKE THE ELEMENTS COURSE?
We understand if you have lifted before, but we just want to make sure you are comfortable with our lingo and ensure your Barbell Academy experience the best.  Many of the core CrossFit movements are complicated and take time to learn; such as deadlifting, squatting, cleaning, and snatching.  We require the elements course to lay a strong foundation for you.  In the end our goal is for you to succeed and be a successful member of the growing community at The Barbell Academy.

These classes also give the coaches an opportunity to learn more about you, and where your strengths and weaknesses are, so we can help when you are in our daily WODs.

If you're a seasoned vet in the CrossFit world you have the option to demonstrate your proficiency of the foundation movements to one of our coaches and jump right into our classes.

I'VE HEARD THIS IS DANGEROUS, IS IT?

There is a certain level of danger in any exercise and significant health factors associated with not exercising. CrossFit itself is not dangerous, bad coaching or no coaching is dangerous. The Barbell Academy is focused removing as much danger as possible from your workout.  We have amazing coaches who have been in the fitness industry for a long time.  We follow a three tiered approach to training.   Mechanics, Consistency then Intensity.

Mechanics is the first step.  Correct movements and good technique is all that matters.  This is why ALL members start with the fundamentals course.  Next comes Consistency. This is the ability to do the movements over and over again, using safe and efficient technique.  Once you are able to move correctly and repeat those movements safely Intensity comes in.   Intensity is the ability to do the movements quickly, but only after establishing consistency.  Its like a pyramid, one does not come before the other, or else the structure will fall.
